LAS VEGAS & GRAND CANYON

Day 1.
Arrival in Las Vegas. Depending on the time of arrival, this is a day to tour and visit Las Vegas. There is ample time for quiet relaxation by the pool and adjusting to jetlag, or for a more active enjoyment of the street scene of this unique American phenomenon. In the evening, we stroll over to the “old” Las Vegas where it all began. Night in Las Vegas

Day 2.
Hoover Dam, Route 66, Williams.
Depart from Las Vegas. The Hoover Dam on Lake Mead and the Colorado River. A marvel of engineering, we walk across the dam and visit the underground electric plants. We stop for lunch at the picturesque and unique semi-ghost town of Chloride. We then drive along the celebrated Route 66 between Kingman and Seligman. In the evening, we arrive in the small town of Williams, the Gateway to the Grand Canyon. Night in Williams.

Day 3.
Train ride and day at the Grand Canyon.
Depart from Williams by train for the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This is a beautiful journey through mountains and forests, animated on board these historic railroad cars by western performers.

Note: FIT travelers may travel in their own car to the Grand Canyon, with suggested stops at the Valle Planes of Fame Museum and in the village of Tusayan.

A first excursion to the west side of the rim of the Grand Canyon. Towards sunset, the views from Hopi Point are breathtaking and unforgettable. Night at the Grand Canyon.

Day 4.
Grand Canyon to Cameron Trading Post.
After a leisurely morning, an easy hike along the eastern side of the rim from Mather Point to Yaki Point for views across the canyon. We then drive along the rim with multiple stops on the way: Grandview Point Moran Point, Lipan Point. Each one adds new perspectives and history to the enjoyment of this natural wonder.

Last stop at Navajo Point and its unique stone watchtower, adorned with traditional Indian paintings.
We drive to the historic Cameron Trading post for dinner, visit of its gallery, museum and store. It carries the some of the highest-quality traditional rugs, pottery and jewelry of Native American-Indians. Night at Cameron Trading Post.

Day 5.
Navajo land, traditions and culture.
Depart from Cameron. Drive through Navajoland toward Lake Powell with many stops along the way to appreciate the natural landscapes, culture and traditions of the Najavo people: the trading post at Tuba City, Marble Canyon, Lee’s ferry, Vermillion Cliffs, Clift Dwellers Lodge. Each site is unique and together they form an unforgettable picture of the history and present state of the Navajo Nation.

We are hosted by a renowned Navajo elder at the Navajo Village Heritage Center for an evening of exchange, discovery, art and dance. Night in Page

Day 6.
Lake Powell.
A morning of relaxation is followed by a visit of the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River and Lake Powell. We then board a boat at the Wahweap Marina for an exploration of the hundreds of canyons and natural coves of Lake Powell. This is an exploration that can be as leisurely or active as the travelers may choose, with numerous possibilities for swimming and hikes. Night in Page.

Day 7.
Grand Staircase Escalante to Kenab.
Depart from Page. Depending on the physical limitations of the travelers, we start the day with a visit to Antelope Canyon with a Navajo guide. Then it is a leisurely day of driving through the beautiful and savage landscapes of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Numerous stops along the way to enjoy unique features and history: Paleontology and dinosaurs exhibit at Big Water, a drive through the Paria River Valley to the ghost town at Pareah, driving along Vermillion Cliffs, geology exhibit at Kenab. Night in Kenab.

Day 8.
Zion National Park.
Entering Zion National Park from the east is an unforgettable experience. The beautiful drive from Kenab take us along the Mt Carmel scenic byway and through the Zion tunnel. This tunnel, dug deep in the mountain, exits high above the valley. It is almost like being born into one of the most magnificent natural wonders of the world. A day of exploration and hikes along the accessible Pa’rus and Riverside trails. Gigantic red cliffs and deep gorges carved by the rivers. This is nature at its most majestic beauty.

Leaving Zion in the afternoon for a drive and a night in the Mt Carmel/Hatch area.

Day 9.
Bryce Canyon National Park.

The day starts with a visit of the Red Canyon where a gentle hike takes us under the famed “hoodoos”, the strange red rock formations. This is a first taste of the unique features of Bryce Canyon. A leisurely drive along the Canyon, with numerous stops for easy hikes to vista points. The views from Sunrise Point and Sunset Point across the “Bryce Amphitheater” give a sense of the grandiose scale of the place.
Leaving Bryce Canyon, the road climbs up through the beautiful mountains and forests of the Cedar Breaks National Monument area before descending to the small historic town of Cedar City. Cedar City is nicknamed “Festival City” as it is the site a renowned Shakespeare festival every summer, attracting performers and audiences for all over the world. Night in Cedar City.

Optional:
Add another day of exploration of the area east of Bryce. Less developed than Bryce Park, it feels remote and wild:. Cannonville, Kodachome Basin, Grosvenor Natural Arch.
Add another day of exploration of the Cedar Breaks National Monument and Brian Head region. Unique flora and one of the best places on the continent for night stargazing.

Day 10.
Cedar City, Parowan Gap and Kolob Canyons.

A visit of the Homestead State Park in Cedar City is a great introduction to the rich history of the West and the Mormon settlers. We then drive to Parowan Gap. This geological feature, a sharp V-shape gap in a mountain, is the site of a unique collection of petroglyphs etched over thousands of years by the local and nomadic Indians tribes. Some are astronomical calendars, while others were communication devises between the Paiute, Hopi and Navajo population of the region.

Kolob Canyons is at the northwest edge of Zion National Park. No less impressive than Zion Canyon itself, Kolob is unique in its vibrant and gigantic red rock formations. While there are not a lot of opportunities for accessible hikes, the enjoyment of the park’s natural beauty is sure to fulfill. We drive to historic St George for an evening of relaxation. Day 11.
St George.
The historic town of St George is a central to understanding the settlement of the Southwest and the Mormons. There is no better way to do that than to tour of the city in the company of actors dressed in period costumes while reenacting the early days of the settlement. A visit of the Tabernacle and Mormon Temple is a great complement to this experience.

The road to Las Vegas is a fascinating transition from the rugged landscapes of the Virgin Mountain range to flat and arid desert. On the way, we stop by the Valley of Fire for a visit of the Lost City Museum and the ancient Native American-Indian petroglyphs.
We arrive in Las Vegas for an evening of relaxation and a walk along the famous Las Vegas Strip. Night Las Vegas

Day 12.
Las Vegas.
A day of relaxation and entertainment in Las Vegas. This is the opportunity to experience and enjoy some of Las Vegas famous sites and activities. And of course, trying one’s luck at a casino is always an option. A stay in Las Vegas will not be complete without a show. There are dozens to choose from. World-class music performers, magic shows, dance and glitz. There is something for every taste. Night Las Vegas

Day 13.
Departure from Las Vegas.
Depending on the flight arrangement, there might be time for more relaxation, visit and shopping. Then it is time to transfer to the airport for departure.

Day 1.
Arrival in Los Angeles Arrive Los Angeles Airport (LAX): Depending on the time of arrival, a tour of the main landmarks of the city.
Day 2.
Los Angeles Visit of Universal studios during the day. Marina Del Rey for a stroll and dinner in the evening Night in Los Angeles
Day 3.
Los Angeles Morning visit of the Getty Center, a large art complex on the hill overlooking the city. Spend the afternoon, in Santa Monica and Venice Beach. Stroll the hip neighborhood Abbott Kinney (galleries, art, restaurants, etc.)
Day 4.
Death Valley Arrive in Death Valley and settle in Furnace Creek. Relax then go out toward sunset to Zabriskie Point Night in Death Valley.
Day 5.
Death Valley All day exploration of Death Valley: Scotty’s Castle, Bad Water (lowest negative elevation point in US and a stroll on the at salt lake), the Dunes, Titus Canyon, etc.
Day 6.
Drive to Las Vegas Leave Death Valley from the Nevada side. Stops at ghost towns.
